Maybe this is too personal, but an honour for mum brought a tear to my eye …

What a great mum! I feel I have kind of dropped the ball … but have a salutary Saturday and remember that the best time to plant an oak tree may have been twenty years ago, but the second best time is today.

Well we didn’t plant an oak tree, we cut a lot of branches off (and then up) from the neighbour’s what I call either key or silver maples. Super dense trees with sticky yellow stuff in the spring and a gazillion keys and leaves in the fall. We have a lot of trees on our lot and these two are to the south and really block the sun and now there is sun streaming through and it is marvellous. And less raking … and more blooms. And I can stand and clip and carry tubs of small branches … it is like a miracle to be able to get around a bit without the cane and use two hands at once! Neighbour lets me garden the sliver of land between us where these two trees grow and now the lilies and hostas, etc., underneath will be much happier and the noon sun was hitting the north side of the lot where most of my garden is. Not an exciting tale, but a happy one.

Where did you find the flower man song? That is wicked and makes the Spinal Tap parody more remarkable …

  4. Dryocopus pileatus says:

mostly it was a serendipitous discovery, as it appeared in the you-tube suggestion list off to the side. i can’t remember now which particular song i was considering playing, but this was one of them. the song is actually about a concert that Ricky Nelson played in at Madison Square Garden, where he believed he was treated harshly by the audience.

Full eclipse of the moon soon … a “blood moon” and I think I heard the next one isn’t until 2018.

  6. Dryocopus pileatus says:

and it’s cloudy here. dang it. i guess i won’t know for sure if Jesus is coming until i hear the doorbell.

it cleared off here just in time. so far SNAFU aka all systems normal. 🙂

  9. xty says:

It clouded up here just as things were getting pink … we slept on the boat because I am a bear for it, and the moon rose incredibly huge, and then the clouds slowly moved in. But life was exciting nonetheless because beavers (yes, actual Canadian beavers) started to circle the boat and Mouse found this most interesting and decided to swim in circles around the boat too … getting so waterlogged only the top of her head was showing and reluctant hubby finally had to bring the soggy mutt into the boat, where she slept on her blanket at our feet like the dead. She is still sodden. And the beavers would slap their tails astonishingly loudly all about … it was quite remarkable.

And just to correct my error, they are Norway maples, not Silver maples. Silver maples have a leaf with much more pronounced and jagged lobes. Now we can all rest easy. And yes, the internet does know almost everything.

riddle – what does one call the clowder?

  13. Dryocopus pileatus says:

and this. i fear the US public is stupid enough to elect Trump. just ask Limbaugh. good f grief.

Good morning. Can’t solve the riddle … but keep thinking about chowder and cool cats.

Good old mum … I miss her a great deal. Funny how you can know something is coming and still find it so sort of shocking to the system. I feel much more mortal.

As to Mars, I think they found what they said they found and the young lady scientist I saw on television struck me as someone very enthusiastic about space and science, not someone acting the part as the front of a massive fraud. While it is true that they got themselves into some sticky water over temperature, it is hard to find an organization that didn’t. And would they promote themselves by working with Hollywood on a movie about Mars? Well it seems pretty obvious that Hollywood would come to Nasa looking for information that only they have … so of course they would. Hard to get good publicity when you are a boring old space agency that has slowly been defunded. I am of two minds about space exploration. One mind says it is useless and expensive and we have problems enough on earth, and the other mind says two things: one, trying to stop man’s inquisitiveness is impossible and a terrible idea because who would set the boundaries on thought; two, so much technological advance has come from the Space program that we all benefit from. But my third mind also rues the military side to all of the space stuff and remembers the moon race as part of the cold war. Trying to imagine a world where the investments made in military hardware were made in any other field is enough to drive me to …. vapour.

  24. xty says:

Outrage … it is all about creating outrage and Limbaugh is a master.

  25. Dryocopus pileatus says:

clowder, not chowder. do you need a clue? OK, think Tarantino flicks.

Limbaugh is the proverbial one-eyed king. hey, much of that deep and original thought by the moron handyman is straight up regurge of this jerks radio show. no wonder we all got along so well.

but have a nice day. 🙂

  26. Dryocopus pileatus says:

    stay dry Pete.

  27. xty says:

I know it said clowder … but I am still clowderless …

Alex Jones and Limbaugh provided the handyman with most of his material indeed. And how can one not assume that Limbaugh is merely a political animal, and that everything he does is done to affect political outcomes.

Looks like the hurricane might miss Pete … I guess the government’s aim is off because usually they are targeting said handyman’s house with their hurricanes, him being such a dangerous enemy. It is beautiful here and the neighbour who shovelled his snow on my lawn truly moved away yesterday and there is a new car (actual an old Honda Element!) it looks like in front of the garage … so here’s to hoping it is a vast improvement. Our nutcake neighbours have got the street blocked off for Hallowe’en again this year, which falls on a Saturday, and I find Hallowe’en brings out the Grinch in the Grinches and the idiot in the nicer neighbours. The guys who moved always just turned their lights out and hid, but the couple who lived there before actually brought the kids treats beforehand if they couldn’t be home. We go full haunt but the neighbourhood children are much younger than they used to be so we have tamed things down.

  28. xty says:

I mean idiot in a good way of course.

  29. Dryocopus pileatus says:

you are absolutely correct. Limbaugh, Jones, … speak to the real republican base – the hardcore idiots, meant in a good way of course. as wealth gets ever more concentrated, the republicans need to incite, and pander more to the fringe. (or maybe move back towards center?) for now, the republican base is shrinking faster than all that money can hijack the political process. and should i say again, just in case, that the democrats are so very close to being every bit as bad?

the answer to the riddle is “reservoir cats”.

and that molecule is cobalamin, vitamin B12. ties in with your sidebar topic. life is mind blowing in its complexity. also robust and yet so fragile. the greatest minds in the world are only now just beginning to figure it all out.

5 day Nor’easter happening here. Super heavy wind and rain. But the humidity finally dropped to a comfortable level and I cut off the AC for the first time since way early June I think. My fave seasons of spring and fall are shrinking away. Too much extreme for me.

And the Element is the first Honda that i’ve owned (and bought it new(when i could buy stuff like that) and i’ve been nothing but happy with it. And now i want an HRV, and I am unable to link the link.

And this is for my incredible family and all of the things that I take for granted.

And I just have always liked the way this guy plays guitar. He does a lot of finger picking which seems rare anymore. And I always have to search his name to spell it right. Knopfler.

  36. xty says:

As long as they aren’t ruining lives I secretly like floods. Got stuck once with the kids in Toronto and all four directions were blocked from the intersection that was high ground like an island, but we managed to sneak through a strip mall and just made it out … I remember a car ahead trying to blow through the water and just stop. But I was canny and found a high ridge sort of … it was crazy.

Hope they aren’t sharks and you are just finally looking like you might have some blood in the stone for them to squeeze. We loved our Honda Pilot and looks like the shine is well off the Volkswagen brand, although my love for the hippie van is unbounded. But it has a Subaru engine in it, strange to tell.

Been giving the brain a sort of rest … more exercise and wow was the brain plasticity book fascinating and gave much hope about aging and recovery from trauma. So been passively listening and feeling calmer and happier. Walked Mouse yesterday with a ski pole style walking stick, not the cane, and it was a much better psychological deal.

Oh, and I turned on the furnace last night. But it is meant to get a little warmer I think this coming weekend, i.e. next weekend, the famed Canadian Thanksgiving. I have brought most of my plants inside.

    And good morning.

  37. xty says:

You need to get a snorkel for the Element ….

  38. Dryocopus pileatus says:

i also was caught in flash flooding but quite a few years ago. that is how i know that cows can swim.

still holding out on the furnace. last night was a only two cat night.

hang in there Pete. i am in the same situation. i am applying for jobs like i had way back in high school over the summers. adjusted for inflation they pay about half as much now though! something has got to give. no one knows how bad the job situation is unless they are out of work in this economy.

hey, if you want to believe in something that never ends up happening, might as well choose something worthwhile. this is for all the doomers that were wrong again last month. the nice thing about this prediction is that you never have to change the date.

Okay this is making me grumpy. Imgur has changed for the confusing worse. Off to find an alternative.

  41. xty says:

    This used to work:

  42. xty says:

But doesn’t anymore. This being a plugin called Comment Images that produces a little button allowing you to choose a file from your computer. Just shows nought.

  43. xty says:

And then I tried to post this, having activated the referenced plugin:

“Okay, here’s one called Comment Attachment … ugly box but that can be changed possibly … but does the picture link work?”

and the answer was a resounding no, in that it couldn’t even find a page to display the mangled comment. So next on the list I will try Comment Image …

  44. xty says:

    Comment Image?

  45. xty says:

Hmnnn, back to the drawing, or more like clip, board. And if you are reading this, more like clip bored, I am sure.
