If being current on modern currency isn’t your cup of tea … how about a slice of ancient constitutional history?

It worked for my grand-pa Bertie, and it works for me, on occasion. And this year is one of those occasions.

Nicholas Vincent on the Magna Carta

Did an 800-year old piece of parchment really change the world? Nicholas Vincent of the University of East Anglia talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the Magna Carta, the founding document of English law and liberty. The Magna Carta was repudiated just ten weeks after King John issued it. Yet, its impact is still with us today. In this conversation, Vincent explains what led to the Magna Carta and how its influence remains with us today in England and elsewhere.

A delightful exploration of the roots of English law on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the signing of this vague promise to behave. A promise that needs renewing.

Behave out there!

I am trying to add capabilities to the “subscriber” category to see if I can figure out the key difference between admin and subscriber … it didn’t matter before the most recent either wordpress or theme update … we seemed on an equal footing re posting pictures. Then the plugin that allowed one to pick a picture broke for both subscriber and admin, and now this oddity of modifying the subscriber’s link so that the work around doesn’t work for only the subscriber. Most odd. Uploading files is definitely enabled, as are comments with up to five links. Back to the investigation.

i totally relate to your frustration. a big reason i no longer work in telecom is because buggy software was driving me insane. the transition to IP based technology rendered logic and troubleshooting talent absolutely useless. oh, and then when you do finally get something working again, you have no idea what exactly fixed it.

good luck. and remember after all else fails, power it all down. when you restart it, everything should be working perfectly.

Oh my God… get the shovels out, it’s getting real deep.
If you remove all the market manipulations and lies, we’ve been in recession since 2007. There’s as old word for this too… DEPRESSION.

We cant even go back to 4% interest rates without a default on the now $18.3 TRILLION DOLLAR national debt.

Most media pundits and so called economic “experts” ignore this fact.

Robert Hook Ben • 5 hours ago

I bet even 1% would do it. There is talk of negative interest rate. If you can imagine that.

    Ben • 5 hours ago

So if the US economy is so great, why cant the Fed raise interest rates right now? What difference will 3 months make??

The truth is the Fed will NEVER raise rates. They know there is way to much debt out there now, and need the economic bubble to continue at least until January 2017..

Mark Ben • 3 hours ago

Its all being covered up. This Obamacare ruling should put the nail in the debt coffin

Brian Ben • 3 hours ago

The way the talking heads in the media, ivory towers in investment, analysts, economists, etc.., talk giddily about the economy, you would think it’s the roaring 20’s. Speaking of which, it is the roaring 20’s for the one percent. Another reason the Fed can’t raise interest rates – if they do, the Hedgies, Arbitragers, Banksters and the rest of the one percent will have a huge hissy fit! This is all so bizarre, it defy’s the imagination. It’s like living in the Twilight Zone and watching a slow train wreck!

    Larry N • 5 hours ago

No doubt the new trade agreement Obama is about to sign will catapult the economy into sky rocket growth. Which is why they are working on a bill to provide for everyone who loses their jobs due to trade agreements.

    5465vick Larry N • 2 hours ago

    Mind Boggling isn’t it?

Joe Schlindwein • 5 hours ago

Never mind that the Fed is keeping it’s balance sheet right where it is. Or the $16 trillion that was handed out to banks. There is nothing different now except it is worse than in 2007. Wages are low and debt is high. This will not end well.

Ben Joe Schlindwein • 5 hours ago

The Fed needs to be seriously audited. They supposedly bailed out individual billionaires around the world in 2008, and they are directly buying stocks from their primary dealer banks.

    altizar • 5 hours ago

right, right. businesses are laying people off left and right and we can’t call it a recession, just what do we call it?

    5465vick altizar • 2 hours ago

    A depression?

Expansion is a really good word. The only things expanding are the national debt and socialism. Oh yeah, taxes. Our taxes are expanding.

    tgcrawford • 4 hours ago

US expansion? 25% of the labor force is out of work. That is the same as the great depression. Should we really listen to the cra-cra media, or this administration? LOL

    Verminh8tor • 4 hours ago

What a hilarious article. Did the author work for the old Soviet newspaper Pravda?

Douglas Bath • 4 hours ago

72 months into an expansion and rates are still near zero. what does that tell you?

    HoHoSteverino • 4 hours ago

Expansion only for the 1%. I’d hate to see what a “recession” looks like … oh yeah, we’re still in one, except for lawyers, CEOs, government officials, law enforcement and private security forces (need all sorts of firepower to hold off the threat of armed insurrection from the former middle class).

Anyone read the non partisan report from the CBO? It debunks this entire partisan propaganda story

    5465vick • 2 hours ago

What recovery? All of the economic numbers portrayed are manipulated! How dumb do they think we are?

    Jack • 4 hours ago

If you take all 6.5 years of economic growth we have averaged 1.4%. Historic growth is 3.3% – Paul Krugman and several other economists have called the current situation a depression. ROI and velocity of money are at great depression levels and real unemployment is in the great depression vicinity as well.

thats why the USA has 18 billion of dollars in the negative…thats why 20% of the chidren live on foodstamps….

Douglas Bath • 4 hours ago

    “unusual nature of this expansion”
    ———
you got that right. which means it may not follow the expected trend based on the last 2 expansions.

Good morning. Recovery on track, going to get the staples out this morning and hoping the words in my brain start flowing again …

And in the interim, to make Roz Chast happy, let me tell you about what I made for dinner the other night. I substituted balsamic vinegar for the red wine vinegar and used tarragon instead of parsley and oregano, and cooked the fennel and onions a bit longer than the recipe says. But yum yum yum. And you could certainly use haddock or cod but halibut is a super treat. Oh and I panfried the fish.

Grilled Halibut with Fennel, Red Onions and Oregano

    4 (6-ounce) halibut filets
Extra-virgin olive oil, 2 tablespoons plus some for drizzling
    Salt and pepper
Crusty bread, cut into thick slices
    1 orange
1 bulb fennel, quartered, core removed, thinly sliced
    1 red onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar, a couple of splashes
    Handful flat-leaf parsley, chopped
1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano leaves, 2 sprigs

    Directions

Heat a grill pan or outdoor grill over high heat.

Drizzle extra-virgin olive oil over the fish and season with salt and pepper. Grill 4 minutes on each side until fish is firm but not tough and cooked through. Grill bread alongside or char under broiler then dress with extra-virgin olive oil, salt and pepper as well.

Preheat a skillet over medium-high heat.

While fish cooks, peel the orange as you would a melon: cut off ends, stand it upright and cut off skin and pith in thin strips from top to bottom. Cut orange across into thin slices.

To preheated skillet add extra-virgin olive oil, 2 turns of the pan, the fennel and onions, season with salt and pepper and cook 3 to 5 minutes until seared and beginning to soften. Add vinegar to the pan and give it a shake. Remove from heat and toss in the oranges, the parsley and oregano. Adjust seasoning and serve salad on dinner plates topped with fish, and seasoned bread alongside.

Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health
    Written by: Gary Taubes

For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet despite this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number.

I hear Greece is imploding again. Boy that has taken a long time to come to a head. And one wonders if there are still years to play out. It is like that joke about how did you become bankrupt. First slowly, and then all at once.

here is my dinner before grilling, if the image works. the beef cut is called tri-tip. i have found them around here lately, and on sale too. not very well known outside of the SW USA.
