Happy Birthday, Nana!

The prequel, as it were, to the main event, but a most necessary prequel.  Mum is 82 today, and she had me when she had just turned 31, which means I am going to turn 39 on my birthday this year.

She was (and is, but in a different way) beautiful:

Mum, no one is more surprised than you that your birthday has come around once again. Happy awesome constitution day and all without a vegetable in the last decade, if you could help it!

Walmart and Downton Abbey: rampant inequality and detachment from reality

Good article from The Guardian that I read this morning. Mrs. O is a fan of “Downton Abbey”. I’m not. The first time I watched it I immediately sensed that I was never going to have any sympathy or nostalgia for the people or the era. An appalling disparity in wealth and social caste. Though I did get a chuckle when they started having money troubles.

I was having a similar problem watching Jeeves and Wooster. Hard to have sympathy for them losing those ancestral homes that were so clearly held onto through poorly disguised slavery.

I used to be a diehard Peak Oiler. It cast a dark cloud over my outlook for most of a decade. Not so much anymore. I have a hunch it’s still out there somewhere, like Ragnarok, but I’ve stopped worrying about it. It will come when it comes. In the meantime, get out there and live.

Happy Birthday to xty’s mum, and may she live forever! And congratulations on the completion of her 82nd ecclesiastical lap around the Sun.

That’s 77,080,000,000 orbit kilometers mum has traveled in those 82 laps. wow

Xty, I too was born when my mum was 31. Were you also 24 inches (61 cm) at birth?
