Polar vortex? Lots of polar, little vortex, on the Georgian Bay

I find these satellite photographs absolutely fascinating, and the better side of the space programmes that are basically driven by that good old military/industrial complex that just won’t die.  The detail is phenomenal, all though you cannot see me waving from our little thawing nook.  Here is the ice over the last few days, behaving like a continent reluctantly accepting tectonic plate theory.

The part of the Bay where we are at looks like land, except that real land has lost its snow cover. Lake Simcoe looks like a frozen pork chop on the middle left.  The townships we are in were named Tay and Tiny after Lord Simcoe’s wife’s two dogs and there was once a lovely headline, “Tiny Fireman Battle Huge Blaze”, that always reminds me fondly of a time when vast swaths of appropriated government control were named after the pets of nobility.  Ah, the good old past.  We should not forget it wasn’t as pastoral as our jaded minds like to think, and the militarization of society is not a recent phenomenon.

But at least now we get pictures from space to go with it.

Happy 4:20.  Now there is an arbitrary date that I am happy to celebrate, and if it coincides with a feast to honour a dead guy who maybe wasn’t so dead after all [at least that’s my theory and I am sticking with it, that they got him down alive, using the Sabbath as an excuse and drugging him to slow his heart] then so be it.  At least we will have good appetites.

There are tiny cowboys as well as tiny firemen.

  2. Dude Stacker says:

I hope you will allow me to unabashedly exploit my exalted status as “Bwampa”.

  3. xty says:

Wow – Bwampa, king of the beasts! And what a pretty little beast that is … and the dog is not to shabby either. It really isn’t fair that little girls are so adorable … makes logic fly out the window and all you want to do is gobble them up somehow and keep them just as they are.

  4. xty says:

Btw, I did watch the tiny cowboys. That is very disturbing and disturbed.

  5. Dryocopus pileatus says:

whatever will they think of next? i think i’d rather get tazed.

  6. EO says:

I was thinking, “Which is cuter, the girl or the pup?”

  7. Dryocopus pileatus says:

    Rico don’t need no stinkin’ daddy-o. 😛

  8. Dryocopus pileatus says:

i hope the other PTC guys know how to vote – with their feet. if that forum goes, there goes the last of the counter opinion, and the site will finally sink into the goldbug/wingnut-osphere mire. and only one thing deserves to die more than the precious metal miners Rico, just one thing.

  9. Dryocopus pileatus says:

    threadjack musical interlude…

  10. EO says:

Here’s a shout out to Rico and all the degenerate gamblers at Pailin’s Trading Corner. That thread is dead, but it was fun while it lasted.

Liking the Earth pictures. got me back to maps.google.com, which isn’t hard to do. That Georgian Bay, and those lakes up there are so huge.
Oh, and HBD 88 to HRH Queen Elizabeth II today (Monday) Her annointing/coronation on the third (last) overturning of the stone, (current job is secure Charles)
Charles always reminds me of Al Gore, bless his heart.

Finally in the 80s and sunny today. Wife was off work and insisted we work outside all day. So i worked on my Jeep. Today all the gauges quit working, maybe they’ll work tomorrow. The radio, wipers, guages, . . . a lot of jeep stuff just takes some time off every now and then.

maybe i can stick a pic in here.

(edit- Or maybe not… Xty- Help!!)

    Happy Earth Day!

“As Earth Day approaches, I believe that the great lesson to be learned from the demise of the passenger pigeon is that our natural resources, while plentiful, are not unlimited. Our ability to abuse the environment exceeds the ability of the environment to absorb those abuses.”

I was trying to find a fitting song to post for Earth Day, but I will spare you from the first one that came to mind.

On second thought, maybe just a few of the lyrics:

“Good morning starshine, the earth says hello……………….Gliddy glub gloopy nibby nabby noopy
    La la la, lo lo
Sabba sibbi sabba nooby aba naba
    Lee lee, lo lo
    Tooby ooby wala
    Nooby aba naba
    Early morning singin’ song

DN- to post a picture, you have to resize it first. For example, the rainbow was 5184 x 3456. I resized it to 800 x 600 which seems to work best (thanks Xty & EO). Don’t know what if any editing software you use, but it’s not too hard. I use Photoscape, which is a free download and does anything my amatuerishness requires.

I once bought a used laptop that came from UW Madison, mainly because it had Photoshop on it. Sorry Adobe, your product is not intuitively user friendly and I don’t have time to read instructions. I only have two gears- full speed ahead, or f_ _ _ it.

Refer to the granddaughter and her puppy picture for some of the things you can do with free Photoscape- her Mommy was in the background, so I cropped it. Still could see her legs, so I erased them w/ cloning function. Then tweaked exposure, deepened contrast and color to bring out the dress, used a little backlighting to enhance facial features and just for good measure threw on a light layer of provia film effect. Then made a copy, used resize feature and posted.

Now get to work- you have a lot of leaves to rake and some bearcat litterboxes to clean (or are they raised beds?).
