Lame claim to fame, but you take what you can get

One of the unusual benefits of living in a community mostly of professors, which I kind of did in the city, where they came and drank cocktails at our house, but really did at the cottage, which has an unusual association with the University of Toronto, other than learning how not to do all sorts of practical things, were information walks.  These consisted of topics fascinating to an eight year old me [not really, but I have always been polite, even as a kid] like how many mosquito bites can you get and still live while looking for mushrooms that can kill you in a bog.

But one of these professors who dragged us around in the hot sun and deerflies or rain and mosquitos, there was no middle ground, happened to be Tuzo Wilson, and when it turned out he was going to give a rock walk, I actually was quite excited because he, beyond having a super cool first name, owned a Chinese Junk.  Which he had brought back from China.  Serious lake creds. Having been reminded of this wonderful geologist, famous for tectonic plate theory, because of this quotation, “beneath all the wealth of detail in a geological map lies an elegant, orderly simplicity,” which crossed offspring #1’s busy desk, and thereby his Junk, I went to the interwebz, hoping to find a picture to help explain this vessel to said offspring, thinking a picture would surely be worth 10,000 Chinese characters.

Well knock me over with an oar, but not just a picture did I find, but even better, a very delightful video, of him actually sailing his Junk in the channel near his cottage.

I am strangely familiar with this channel, as once, with the stupidity of youth and one of my siblings, we attempted to get to the cottage over the Bay in the dark, in the rain, and instead managed to find his cottage, which was actually much more difficult than continuing on to ours, but we were a little freaked out by then, having actually gotten the boat stuck on a shoal and having had to push it off, both of us in the water, not in the boat. What can I say?  We were impetuous and turning on the search light in the heavy rain showed us heavy rain, one foot away, in all directions.  Or the blinding white reflection of the inside of the boat.  And then a light that wasn’t ours, and a dock we could calm down at.

His charming wife was there and plied us with hot drinks and then lent us their tin boat, so we could tootle on to our final destination, leaving the parents’ still intact big boat at their dock, which we could fetch in the morning, and not risk destroying further.  It is an odd experience getting lost on the water, and I don’t really recommend it, even if you do get to meet the close family of famous geologists and drink their hot chocolate.  We returned with wine and a poem, which luckily I cannot share with you.  But I can show you his Junk, even if you cannot touch it.

There is only one comment on that video on Youtube, and proving that the internet is astonishingly puerile as well as possibly transformational, and that perhaps people aren’t worth saving, it is simply penis.  I feel like finding that fellow and rapping him sharply across the head could be a meaningful life’s quest. His name is khairul azwan, in case you meet him and want to swat him for me. But luckily I remember the deconstructionists, and the penis not mightier than the pen is, even if a sword is a little tough to challenge with a feather quill.

A warmer Wednesday is in the offing, which isn’t saying much since it was -10C when I lurched from the boathouse this dawn.  But it sure was beautiful, and spring hopes eternal.

And so does hope.  Spring infernal eternal I mean.

    sleeping in EO?

  2. EO says:

Yup, doing a whole lotta nuthin today.

Got up, had my tea, took daughter to school, took a nap…

Now preparing to venture forth. Off to the pelmeni restaurant to restock my freezer. You know…priorities.

  3. EO says:

    I had checked the news.

Russia/Ukraine hotter than ever. Precious metals going nowhere.

Same old, same old. I guess I haven’t missed much.

The world at large is pretty much like a soap opera. You can miss it for months at a time, and get all back up to speed in half an episode.

  4. xty says:

I thought that today, when I checked the price of gold. I am finding the shipping news as relevant as anything.

  5. Dryocopus pileatus says:

i’m wondering if this is the big dipper? should i buy now, to make up for all the dips i bought coming down from 1900? i’m wavering here. i think i’ll pony up the ten bucks for a glimpse behind the wizard’s curtain. you guys don’t have to pay. but each can kick in 2 bucks. i’ll make it voluntary.

  6. Dryocopus pileatus says:

and the biggest shill of all, Jim fucking Sinclair, aka “Santa”, is now saying that everything is playing out exactly as he predicted, but just give it another two or three years.

so i’m going to go blow some smoke myself now, but no, it ain’t going up my ass.

  7. EO says:

Some interesting comments about Santa on this thread at Trader Dan’s. Even Dan, who has generally been a defender of Santa until now, is disturbed by it.

  8. Pete Maravich says:

hey man, BTFD, FUBM, Back Up The Truck, Keep Stackin,..it’s gonna be HEH! If I told you how I know, it would compromise my integrity. Send me that $10.00

fucking shills, every one of them… Turd, Santa, Willie (well, probably just a nutter) and that mofo Maguire. too bad i don’t believe in hell, because i’d love to sneak in ahead of these slimeballs so i could greet them at the gate. and sorry for the extra salt DN.

  11. Dryocopus pileatus says:

  12. DN says:

huh DP? why sorry… for what salt? Please explain, and type very slowly… even though my thermometer says it’s still winter, my 70 Oak trees are in the mood for love. I’ve got pollen about 1/4 inch thick and haven’t had a clear thought for nearly a week…

Xty, What a chilly little boat your geologist friend had! I would have loved to ride along and have him explain how the structures along the river were formed. I completed my self-study Masters degree in Geology in about 2004. It is very interesting, made me wish the professor who had the shortest line at the college admissions office would have been a geology professor. (We “undecideds” were all herded to the professor with the shortest line. So 5 years later I had a degree in Criminal Justice. i don’t know either)

Also Xty … my prejudiced perusal for the purely pejorative and puerile penile comment perceives it was purposefully parsed.

reminds me of Black Sabbath. and Rush.

    salty language DN.

    i think i have a virus.

You or your computer? My dad’s Apple IIe once started filling his screen with $ signs, I kid you not. An errant drop of solder was to blame if I remember correctly, but it was prophetic.

And Pete, that was a good summary. Maybe we could start an online church and make a fortune. But just for the kids, we would do it all for the kids.

Here is just before dawn, as I took in the fresh air. Some poor ducks came and went to land where there was open water yesterday, and their feet skimmed off the ice. You could hear it. What a disappointment but they made it to the water you can see shining in the picture, which was still a little open near the shore. But today is forecast to be slightly warmer than gawdawful, so there is hope.

  15. xty says:

And if you look closely, you can see Mouse has sniffed out the lake.

  16. EO says:

HEH!!! Yeah, I had almost forgotten about that. Surely the most blatant ethical failure in the history of The Swamp. And THAT takes some doing!

One of my great regrets in life is that Peckerwood already has a copyright on the phrase “post-HEH world”. Man, I’d like to steal that one. I’m sure I could make a buck off it, which would be totally in keeping with the spirit. Turd would be proud.

  17. EO says:

On a side note, I had to mute Rick Santelli on CNBC again this morning. Don’t that fucker ever shut up? He’s gotta be getting side payola from ZeroHedge. (which in turn is bankrolled by the shadowy cabal of the 1% of the 1%, the fringe of the fringe…)

  18. EO says:

I need a Doomsday Bunker, just to keep safe from those sonsabitches on the Whackjob Right. Heavy on the canned hams and bacon, light on the silver, lol.

  19. EO says:

They got me convinced, Cliven Bundy has a God-given right to come and graze his cattle right on my fuckin lawn. And if you don’t think so, you are socialist scum. Prolly a fag too.

I better put in a watering trough. I’m all about the animals.

  20. EO says:

    Too good to not post

  21. EO says:

    Oops, screwed that up. Reprise…

  22. xty says:

You left out turntable on that list. You can see the contented bunker people, with their happy teen, listening to the oldies. You can bet they are not listening to the newies.

But how are you a socialist if you don’t allow common grazing? That sounds like you are a capitalist and think you own your lawn … I am so confused …

  23. EO says:

That adds to the confounding irony of it all.

Sorry, gotta run. Gotta flip over my Mario Lanza record. It’s in High Fidelity!

  24. Pete Maravich says:

you look a bit like Don Draper, don’t forget cocktails and a floozy.

  25. Dryocopus pileatus says:

your hubby might have recognized it Xty. i was just fooling around…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexadecimal

EO – i don’t hold any special rights. you may use the term post HEH world. i’m living it, and i don’t care for it too much. another car repair, and some more silver to sell, ahem, post HEH, for another loss. soab!
yes, the tragedy of the commons – some self righteous prick over overgrazes and still doesn’t pay his fees. seriously – i don’t like federal overreach, but the wing-nuts description of the situation is completely one sided. and then the evil communist sub plot bullshit again. my God, these people are fools. greed is greed and no one political party or philosophy has a lock on it.
see y’all later. got to decide what to sell next.

  26. xty says:

Yeah, I did recognize it. I don’t think you should count in weird bases, even though it proves useful. And F is not a number. Lots of math stuff makes me irrationally mad. Like e and i. An imaginary number still bothers me as the key to solving something. But I have learned to live with it.

  27. EO says:

Here are some numbers that are NOT imaginary. As of this week, you’d have been better off (ytd return) holding long term treasuries than gold. I guess all those articles from earlier this year about 2014 being the moonshot in metals will now be scrubbed.

Who am I kidding? The Doomsters will just “kick the can” once more, and dust off the same garbage articles at some point later on.

Note, including SLV on that chart would have been called for “unsportsmanlike conduct”.

  28. EO says:

Wow, talk about your thread kill.

Anyway, the neo-nazi bashing episode of “Twilight Zone” is on SciFi channel right now. As a great man once said, “I hate Illinois Nazis”.

  30. EO says:

Harry Reid, telling it like it is. And of course, the Swamp Creatures are now all calling for Reid’s head on a pike, lol. Yay for Harry!

Harry Reid calls rancher’s gun-toting backers ‘domestic terrorists’

EDIT: I gave money to Reid’s last campaign, and am proud of it!

  31. Dryocopus pileatus says:

once i’m out of silver to sell, i will start selling my guns. actually i should just start selling my winners now. i loaded up on Colt “physical”, when the news went out some years back that they would no longer sell guns directly to the public. it is ironic really when considering my investments, that the lefties have done way more good for my financial well being than the wing-nuts ever have.

  32. Dryocopus pileatus says:

i stacked a few of these. this gun is way better than any .44 Dirty Harry ever had. but he was a S & W man anyway.

  33. Dryocopus pileatus says:

EO is the one that killed the thread. i’m just making sure.

  34. EO says:

Why does this sound so familiar?

The nexus has a name. IRB. But there are clearly a lot of other fellow travelers in the goldbug “community”.
